Title: 1st reflection After watching the video, it made me think about an incident in the mrt that shows how ungracious Singaporeans are. A mother was carrying a child but no one offered her a seat and she was a tourist! By looking at the child, I think he is old enough to walk, must be pretty heavy! The mother was using one hand to hold the handle and the other to carry her child. She was standing right in front of those people who were sitting, the one where got only two seats. I feel so angry that they were closing their eyes and did not notice her or maybe they just didn't think of giving their seat to her! I felt like asking the person who was sitting right in front of her to give her seat to the mother but I just couldn't open my mouth. I tried using my eye power by staring at the person, hoping she would open her eyes and see that someone needed the seat more than her. Then later, someone got out of the seat and went out of the mrt. The mother saw the empty seat and wanted to sit but another woman wanted to sit on it. The woman's butt almost touched the seat when she noticed the mother and stood up to give that seat to her. I think they were going to Bird Park. I agree that many people jaywalk and we don't clear our plates and utensils after we eat. People jaywalk because they did not see any cars and they do not want to waste time for the traffic light to turn green. Many people think that it is the job of the cleaners to clear the tables after they eat. Some foreigners do clear up their own dishes but after a while, they stopped because Singaporeans are not doing it. Our class discussed about graciousness in movie theatres. Singaporeans leave their litter behind after watching a movie, especially teenagers and young children. There is some ungracious behaviour like not putting our feet on top of the seats, throwing popcorns at each other, bringing food that was not bought from the cinema's food kiosks. After watching the PCK video about graciousness, we rush to get in and out of the mrt is not because of the rain, it is time. After reading the article by Philip, I feel that Martin Gilliland is right about learning some manners but I think that rushing to go in and out of the mrt is okay. Time is limited. We all have 24 hours. After school, I want to get home as fast I can to do my homework. I think exams are really important and students should be concerned about it. Parents work hard to earn money to pay for school fees because their parents could not afford it and they don't want the same to happen to us. They could not choose the job that they want so they want to give us the best and we can choose the courses that we want to get into and the jobs we want. Frankly, sometimes I didn't notice the people who needed the seats more. I really fell asleep in the mrt once. I don't like it when people cut queues; it is so unfair to all those people waiting in line, including me. They don't know how to be patient and wait for their turn. They won't like it when others do it to them but they do it to us. Is it because they think that people cut their queue so they cut the queues of others? I know that Singaporeans do show some gracious behaviour but we should work on it. I admit that I also show some ungracious behaviour too. I should say 'please’ and 'thank you' when the cleaners help me wipe the table in the coffee shop but I didn't. We also discussed about being gracious in the lift like allowing people to exit instead of blocking the way and helping people to press the button of the level that they want to go. We should raise awareness about graciousness in society and inculcate good values from young. Written by: Berenice |
